About the program

Little kicks, big growth

This is where the journey to black belt begins. Our juniors program takes kids through traditional Songahm Taekwondo one belt at a time

Taekwondo

Taekwondo helps kids build confidence, respect, and self-discipline. Through structured belt progressions, they learn goal-setting, how to focus, and how to persevere. Classes are fun and active, improving coordination, balance, and physical fitness while encouraging social interaction and teamwork.

Kuntaw self-defense

Kuntaw introduces kids to the cultural roots of Filipino martial arts while teaching them practical self-defense through smooth, flowing movements. It improves coordination and timing, and helps children think quickly under pressure. The art's rhythm-based techniques also enhance body awareness and agility.

6 Reasons Families Choose Martial Arts Grand Traverse

From first kicks to black belts, MAGT builds skills that last a lifetime. Whatever your age or program, our classes develop the whole person on the mat and far beyond it.

Confidence

As kids earn each belt and master new techniques, they discover what they’re capable of. That earned self-belief shows up everywhere — speaking up in class, trying new things, and standing tall in tough moments.

Respect

From bowing on the mat to listening to instructors and training partners, kids learn to treat others with courtesy and care. It’s a foundation of good manners that follows them off the mat and into everyday life.

Self-Discipline

Structured belt progressions teach kids to set goals, focus their energy, and stay committed. They learn that steady effort, not shortcuts, is what leads to real progress.

Perseverance

Every new belt brings a fresh challenge. Kids learn to push through frustration, keep practicing, and bounce back from setbacks, building the grit to finish what they start.

Focus & coordination

Whether it’s the flowing movements of Kuntaw or the rhythm of kickboxing, our juniors sharpen their balance, timing, and body awareness while learning to think quickly under pressure.

Friendship & teamwork

Classes and camps are active, social, and fun. Kids build lasting friendships, learn to encourage one another, and grow into a supportive community that makes coming back easy.
